Cane Bay’s basketball teams got productive last week in their effort to scratch out playoff bids.
The Lady Cobras and Cobras swept Stratford on the road to pick up their first victories in Region 7-AAAA this winter. Both improved to 1-3 after the first rotation through the region slate.
“I asked the seniors if they want to play past senior night and they said ‘yes,’” Cane Bay girls coach Ira Owens said. “Then I said we have to win this game.”
Owens’ team raced out to a 27-9 lead in the first half and cruised to a 45-30 victory. The win set up a crucial game with Wando on Tuesday. The Lady Cobras need to win to force a tie for third place in the region standings, and only three teams from Region 7 can earn playoff spots.
“If we understand the tiebreaker system correctly, the way we figure we’ve got to beat them by eight points or more,” Owens said.
Against Stratford, Brookelynn Doctor led Cane Bay with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked two shots.
Adriana Barkley added nine points and Makayla Dudley eight points. Dudley also had seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
McKenzie Yon led Stratford with 20 points and Asia Ifield chipped in eight points.
In the boys game, the Cobras grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never trailed in winning 65-54. Jiquan Hammond led Cane Bay with 21 points, while Traevon Doctor and Raekwon Rivers tacked on 14 and 12 points respectively. Louis Rivers and Christian Lawyer added eight points apiece.
“Getting that first (region win) is huge,” Cane Bay coach Calvin Craft said. “… We really did come out focused, playing together, running our stuff and being pesky on defense.”
Doctor led Cane Bay with seven boards and Hammond came up with six steals.
Stratford was led by Demetre Rivers, who had a game-high 27 points.
After Wando, the Cobras cap the regular season Feb. 5 at Goose Creek and Feb. 8 at home versus Stratford.
