Ashley Ridge freshman wins state golf tournament

Ashley Ridge freshman Zak Butt had the top score at the 2013 Class AAAA State Golf Tournament.
Butt carded a 214 to claim the individual state champion honor for the tournament held at Furman Golf Club Monday and Tuesday. He was the only player to break par for the tournament.
Butt trailed Riverside High School's Jonathan Hardee, an Alabama commit, by three shots entering the final round but fired a 69 to win the tournament. The Swamp Foxes’ final round included five birdies to just two bogeys. Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said Butt’s birdie on the difficult 17th hole, a par 4, sealed the victory.
“I'm extremely proud of Zak and his accomplishment,” Shaw said. “I have never seen a kid this mature and so determined to be successful. He is a very special kid and I have no doubt he will do great things in the game of golf.”
South Aiken High came from behind to finish with a team score of 922 and win the tournament. Boiling Springs held the lead but after South Aiken’s surge the Bulldogs’ 925 score was only good enough for runner-up honors.
Ashley Ridge (936) was right in the mix but just didn't have enough depth in the end to make a charge. The Swamp Foxes placed fifth overall.
Fort Dorchester (981) placed 10th and Summerville (986) placed 12th.
Fort Dorchester's RJ Keur finished third overall in the individual standings with a 219 total at the 54-hole event. Ashley Ridge's Austin Zoller placed sixth with a 223 total. Senior Sam Myers led Summerville with a 264 total.
Butt, Keur and Zoller all made the All-State Team.
