Summerville American claimed the 2013 South Carolina Little League Baseball District 2 Minors (age 9-10) Championship Monday with a 7-4 victory over Summerville National.
Noah McGahee earned the pitching win after spending three-plus innings on the mound and surrendering only a few hits. He struck out six batters. Jacob Altman relieved him in the fourth and didn’t surrender a single hit to pick up the save.
McGahee also led all batters, going 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored. Travis Pope had two RBIs and scored a run for Summerville American.
Sean Farrell led the Summerville National batters, reaching on a single and an error and driving in a run. Jack Luxmore scored two of Summerville National’s runs.
With the win, Summerville American advances to the Little League Minors state tournament to be held in Irmo July 11. There, six teams will compete for a state championship in the double elimination tournament.
Summerville National got off to a good start in the District 2 championship series held at Crowfield Little League. Luxmore led off Monday’s game and reached on a base on balls. Devon Ennis drove him in with a fielder’s choice.
Summerville National then loaded the bases and Ennis scored on a catcher’s interference call for a 2-0 Summerville National lead.
Summerville American answered in the bottom of the frame.
Mason Woznac received a base on balls, advanced off a single by McGahee and scored off a single by Dakota Creech. Xavier Silva received a walk to load the bases and then Pope drove in McGahee to tie the game.
The score held until the bottom of the third when Summerville American had its most productive turn at bat.
Creech and Silva both reached on a base on balls and Pope doubled to plate Creech. Eric Vien followed with a single to drive in Silva. Summerville American loaded the bases with another base on balls and then Pope scored on a wild pitch to give his team a 5-2 lead.
Summerville National kept things interesting by scoring two runs in the fourth. After the team loaded the bases, Farrell drove in Luxmore and Nathan Malloy scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to a run.
Summerville American’s final two runs were due largely to errors. In the bottom of the fourth, a high throw on a pick-off attempt allowed McGahee to score.
In the fifth, Tradd Cross reached on a base on balls. He stole second, advanced to third on a high throw during the play and kept running. Summerville National had a chance to make a play at the plate but the throw home was also high.
Altman fanned the first batter in the sixth and got the next two batters to ground out to end the game.
This weekend, Summerville Little League will host the District 2 50/70 Intermediate (11-13) Tournament. The tournament begins Friday at 7 p.m. at the Boundary Street fields. Saturday games are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
Summerville Little League will also host the state Intermediate Tournament beginning on July 6. Later this summer, Summerville Little League will host the District 2 Juniors (13-14) Tournament but a date has not yet been set for that tournament.
