A trio of female boxers represented The School of Hard Knox, home of Summerville Boxing Team, at the 2013 National Women’s Golden Gloves/Silver Gloves Tournament.
More than 200 female boxers from across the nation converged on Ft. Lauderdale July 9 to showcase their talents and athletic abilities.
Brianna Slark, 13, represented South Carolina in the age 12-13, 85-pound weight class. Slark trained for more than three months, sparring more than 36 rounds and getting into top performing shape for the tournament. She arrived in peak condition and won by a walk over to bring home a Gold Medal and the National Title of Silver Gloves Champion.
Cheyenne Rayne Lewellen, 14, competed in the age 14-15, 125-pound class. Lewellen fought for the Gold Medal against Zoe Glass, a 2012 National Junior Olympics Champion from Michigan.  Lewellen turned in three good rounds and threw Glass off her game.  However Glass’ hand was raised in victory and Lewellen had to settle for the 2013 National Silver Gloves Silver Medal.
Raven A Lewellen, 16, had two opponents to face for her shot at a National Title.  However, when the coach of those two young ladies witnessed Lewellen in the ring he decided to pull his athletes out of the running for the title. Therefore the Summerville boxer, who weighed in at 94 pounds, now holds the Gold Medal and National Junior Golden Gloves title.
Coach John Lewellen says he would like for his team to participate in more national tournaments because they present extraordinary opportunities for boxers to get nationally ranked among the top boxers in the nation and draw the attention of Olympic Boxing officials.  However, local boxers often have trouble attending such events because of travel costs.
