Stuff the Bus enjoys best year yet

The Berkeley County School District’s 2013 Stuff The Bus campaign was the most successful in the program’s three-year history, raising $46,407.67.
Campaign results were announced at the school board’s Aug. 13 meeting at the district office in Moncks Corner.
The district has sponsored the campaign for the last three years to provide school supplies to underprivileged students. Residents donated 12,526 items with a gross retail value of $14,179.83. The items will be distributed among the district’s 41 schools.
“It is our goal to bring our schools together with meaningful initiatives that benefit children,” BCSD communications director Amy Kovach said.
Donations included 22 boxes of elementary school supplies with a value of $252.74 per box; 10 boxes of middle school supplies valued at $452.74 each; and nine high school boxes at $365.10 each.
Three fundraisers were held in support of the drive.
A June golf tournament raised $13,740.84. Last month’s “Shaggin’ Under the Stars” raised $1,317. A rally on Aug. 3 raised $170, bringing the cash donations to $15,227.84.
Free media exposure for the event, including TV, was valued at $17,000.

In other business:
• BCSD Superintendent Rodney Thompson announced that upgrades to Timberland High School’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit are finished. The upgrades were completed on time and under the budget allotted.
The school board honored Perry Fogle for being named the 2012-2013 South Carolina Bus Driver of the Year. David Jerideau was also recognized; he was named the 2012-2013 South Carolina Transportation Support Person of the Year.
