Senior Donavan Thompson scored three first-half touchdowns to lead Ashley Ridge to its first win of the season.
The Swamp Foxes (1-4) earned a 27-20 victory over Cane Bay (0-5), which is still looking for its first victory.
“We'll take a win any way we can get it,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “We played well in the first half, but looked really sloppy in the second. We have to clean that up because good teams play four quarters. I'm happy with the way our offense moved the ball and the way our defense played in the first half.”
Ashley Ridge dominated the opening half, totaling 300 yards of offense while holding Cane Bay to 43 yards. Running back Tyler Garland put the Swamp Foxes on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run that capped the opening drive. Then Thompson took over.
Thompson scored on a 6-yard run as well as on a 42-yard pass from Chandler Avenel and a 35-yard pass from Sean White.
Ashley Ridge used multiple quarterbacks and finished the first half with more than 200 passing yards.
But once the Cobras got going, the Swamp Foxes had trouble slowing them down.
The Cobra surge began after Ashley Ridge took a 27-0 lead with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter. Cane Bay defensive back Tracy Gilliard returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards into the end zone for a 27-7 score entering the half.
Then Cane Bay kept Ashley Ridge off the scoreboard for the final two quarters while scoring on a pair of passes to Devin Dingle. The receiver scored on a 37-yard pass play in the third quarter and on a 4-yard pass play with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
Cane Bay QB Devin Kilgore passed for more than 200 yards in the final two quarters.
“We didn't show up in the first half and we made too many mistakes in the second half,” Cane Bay coach Russell Zehr said. “Twice we were in scoring position and had bad snaps. We just aren't disciplined enough to beat a good football team like Ashley Ridge. This team has potential, we just have to cut out the mistakes.”
