Gateway to the

tricounty cemetery

To the Editor:

Okay....some call it the gateway to Charleston. I call it like I see it. The Death Zone.

Nineteen miles from St George to Summerville, with scarred pine trees marking the site of death of 58 people in over 1,700 accidents.

All this on a major freeway referred to as I-26. Less than a year ago Tony Sheppard SCDOT Engineer reported 1,734 accidents, 709 serious injuries, and 44 deaths, in a briefing he gave locally.

That was from Jan 2007 to Dec. 1, 2012. I did the math and calculated by Sep1 2013 the death toll would reach 58.

Actually, it hit that number last Friday at 1:30 p.m., when the Interstate was closed down to extricate a 68-year-old grandmother who was killed, and her driver transported to MUSC in critical condition.

The number of accidents may be much higher, as a recent news article on Oct. 10 reports 2007 thru 2009 as 57 deaths.

The accident total to date must surely exceed 2,000 with more than 800 serious injuries just based on known statistics since Jan. 2007 to date. I do not know, but sure would like to see an update from DOT.

Seems like nobody cares. BCDCOG seems to be okay with it. The DOT Commissioners and some local politicians seem to be okay with it based on published remarks to save the scarred up pine trees at all costs.

SCDOT Safety Engineers had a plan to stop the carnage and death on this 19 mile gateway to the tricounty cemetery.

The politicians stopped it. Who is right? I wish someone would explain it, without the typical spin job! The speed limit is the same for a

ll comparable freeways.

Oh yes...and you want to turn the largest highway building project in this state to BCDCOG? That scares the hell out of me!

Ridgeville council out of touch with people

To the Editor:

We, the Ridgeville Concerned Citizens, hosted a Ridgeville Town Hall Meeting on October 22, 2013 at 7 p.m., 125 Schoolhouse Street, Ridgeville Town Hall.

Mayor and Council members are out of touch with the Citizens of Ridgeville. They refused to attend the meeting the citizens invited them to.

It is clear the Mayor and council members do not care how the Voters and Citizens feel.

Mayor Williams controls Ridgeville even when it comes to announce the upcoming election for November 05, 2013.

He refused to publicized it in the paper. Not letting the voters know. By not informing the voters, he will stay in the Mayor position forever and Town Council Members doing what pleases them.

These are some of the questions we were concern in knowing; Town Ordnance is violated by the Mayor and council members and no one seem to care what is being done, as Government Officials.

Monies are not being classify in the right account such as traffic tickets, etc..

Why are elections not posted in the newspaper or notices made available, so voters can file?

Not informing the voters and the public, he will never be replaced because no one knows the open and closing of the filing dates.

This type of scheme means Mayor Williams gets to spend the Taxpayers’ money the way he wants to.

At time the Council Members don’t know anything until it is spent.

Ridgeville Town received a $50,000 grant for Recreation, the voters and citizens do not want the Town of Ridgeville Government to misused the spending of this fund, as the Government Officials did in the past with other spending.

The Mayor of Ridgeville James Williams and The Town Council Members: Clarence Hughes, Lorraine C. Grant, newly elected Candidates did not show up, nor did the other two (2) Council Members: Joseph Peal and Nora Elaine Doctor, who were not candidates for the November 05, 2013 election.

By not showing up, it appears that they are running from facts.
