Ashley Ridge senior Madison Nettles has accepted a scholarship offer from the Texas Women’s University Gymnastics Team.

Nettles, who has been a gymnast since she was 4, signed her national letter of intent with the university Nov. 13 during a celebration in the ARHS auditorium for six college-bound athletes.

“I also talked to the University of Pennsylvania but I like that (TWU) is a little smaller plus they made me a better offer,” Nettles said. “When I went there for a visit I met the members of the team and I felt a real connection with them so I feel it will be a good fit.”

Nettles has competed with the Gymnastics Academy of Charleston at state and regional meets for the past several years. She is two-time Level 10 gymnast and a three-time Level 9 gymnast.

She qualified for the South Eastern championship meet the past five years and was selected as an alternate for Level 10 NIT Championships during her junior season. That year she also placed second on vault during the South Carolina championship meet.

“Hopefully I’ll make nationals this year,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to moving out of South Carolina because that is my comfort zone. I want to branch out and living in Texas will be a totally different experience. It should be fun.”

Nettles is a member of the ARHS National Honors Society and plans to major in biochemistry. As for her role on the Pioneers’ team, she’ll find out next fall.

“They told me to be prepared to compete in all four events and then after I train with them for a while they will decide where I will help the team the most,” she said.

TWU coach Lisa Bowerman told twuathletics.com: “Maddie is a strong and confident athlete with a ton of talent. She will certainly vie for a spot in line-up on all four events during her freshman year.”
