A four-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head shortly after 4:30 p.m. on May 12 in Summerville.
His grandmother, 75, reported that she had arrived at 811 W. Richardson Ave. with the boy shortly before the incident occurred, according to a Summerville Police Department incident report.
The woman said she was bringing groceries into the house when she heard a loud bang outside.
When she went outside she saw the boy lying on the ground bleeding with a gun next to him, according to the report. She took him inside, which is where an officer found him upon arrival.
The boy appears to have found the gun in the house. Investigators have not determined if criminal charges will be filed, according to reports.
The grandmother said she did not know where the gun came from, according to reports.
Dorchester County EMS, the Summerville Fire Department and Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office also responded. The responding officer reported that the Taurus .25 handgun was lying on the dining room table when they arrived.
The boy was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina via helicopter in critical condition, where he remained through Wednesday.
