Soup, crackers, applesauce, beef jerky, coffee, baby food, cake mixes, charcoal and non-perishable items galore…
People came from all over, battling traffic and long lines, to take part in the clearance sale that started this morning at the Piggly Wiggly warehouse in Jedburg.
“I have enough applesauce for probably a year – and it doesn’t expire until June of next year!” said shopper Sharron Sommerfeldt.
Store items have been discounted to up to 70 percent off and the sale continues through June 21 – but only while supply lasts. Already on social media people are reporting the warehouse is nearly wiped clean.
Christy Boudolf, senior director of marketing and advertising with Piggly Wiggly Carolina, said early today that the warehouse was “very limited” with items and would likely be closing early. It will not be open Saturday.
On Thursday Boudolf said the warehouse sale made a “big dent” in a mere three hours; there were folks lined up early before the sale started at 10 a.m.
“The turnout was larger than we had expected,” she said.
Up to a mile of traffic piled up on Old Dairy Road and Newton Way, leading up to the warehouse. People were reportedly in line outside the warehouse for up to two hours, and were being let inside as buggies and carts became available for shopping.
By noon Boudolf estimated they had seen more than 500 shoppers.
Despite the lengthy wait people endured to get inside the building, Boudolf said things went smoothly.
“Everybody has been patient, calm and things have been very orderly,” she said.
Item options include groceries, cleaning supplies, general merchandise, health and beauty, frozen foods and cigarettes. All sales are final and the warehouse will not hold any items. Shoppers can pay with credit cards, debit cards and cash – no checks, EBT or WIC will be accepted.
Boudolf said the first things they sold out on were bath tissue and paper towels.
“When it’s gone, it’s gone,” Boudolf said. “There’s no replenishments.”
