Comact Equipment expansion to bring 50-plus jobs

When the Comact Equipment U.S., Inc. plant opened near St. George last September, it had grown to 15 employees by the following November, when the plant held its first open house event.

Today the plant, owned by the British Columbia-based BID Group of Companies, has roughly 50 employees in Dorchester County.

By next summer, the company plans to have expanded up to at least 100 employees – thanks to a new 3,500-square-foot expansion project that is now in the works.

Comact Equipment is an equipment-maker for the forest industry. Brian Fehr, chief executive officer of the BID Group, said the company is spending $1.9 million on this expansion in Dorchester County, and the project will be completed by Nov. 14 – the plant’s one-year anniversary party.

“It’s awesome,” Feher said. “It’s above and beyond our expectations. We’re happy to be in the southeast of the United States.”

Fehr said his company has 800 employees in Canada alone. The business, which is more than 30 years old, has expanded through 11 states in the country.

“We’re busy in the United States and we love it,” he said. “The forest industry is booming in South Carolina.”

The $1.9 million project includes three sub-parts: $750,000 is going toward the building extension; $750,000 will be spent on new equipment; and the remaining $400,000 is going to be spent on re-doing the roads leading up to the building in order to accommodate truck traffic.

Fehr said new job positions will cover work such as welding, fabricating and project management.

“We’ll slowly keep increasing our numbers as we find people,” Fehr said.

Fehr adding his company is excited to be a part of Dorchester County’s ecomony.

“We’re very positive and completely committed to the area,” he said. “Dorchester County has been great to us.”
