Chris Li helped Ashely Ridge capture its first boys tennis region championship.

The Ashley Ridge boys tennis team captured its first region championship April 16 by claiming a 5-2 win over Summerville at the Doty Park tennis courts.

The Green Wave fought hard, but the Swamp Foxes matched that intensity to capture the Region 7-5A title and improve to 12-1 on the season with a 6-0 mark in region matches. Summerville, which finished on top of its region the past six seasons, captured region runner-up honors later in the week with a 5-1 win at Fort Dorchester.

“I told the players in January that our team goal was to win Region 7 this year,” said Ashley Ridge coach Shaun Satterfield. They put in the work over the summer, and that continued into the season. They have been very receptive to our coaching this season and have had a great attitude throughout the year. It’s also very helpful to have all of the parents on board. They have been nothing short of incredible in their support of our team.”

Ashley Ridge has claimed region runner-up honors multiple times but historically struggled to beat region leaders such as Summerville, Wando and Beaufort, so fans of the team are hoping this week marks the beginning of a new trend. The region title gives the Swamp Foxes a No. 1 seed for the playoffs scheduled to begin April 23 and home-court advantage for the first two rounds if the Swamp Foxes win in the first round.

Summerville finished the week with a 10-4 record with a 4-2 mark in the region to secure a No. 2 seed. The Green Wave will also open the playoffs at home, or at least at its home away from home. That playoff match will be hosted at Doty Park in case it goes so long that the sun starts to set. Unlike the courts at the school, those at Doty Park have lights.
