The Summerville and Fort Dorchester girls’ tennis teams opened region play against each other Tuesday.
The Green Wave earned a 7-0 win on its home court to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in Region 8-AAAA. Summerville’s sole loss this year came to Wando.
Earning wins in singles play for the Wave were Caroline Green, Morgan Moore, Katie Wiseman, Chandler Miler and Lauren Wiseman. In doubles action, the Wave teams of Moore/Lauren Wiseman and Linder/Lacey Jones earned wins.
Summerville coach Bryant McKee is hoping his team will continue to play well and top its performance last season. In 2007, the team placed second in the region behind Beaufort and was eliminated in the third round of the playoffs.
“I’ve really got the same team as last year, but some players have shifted around in the lineup some,” McKee said. “I’m expecting a tight race for the region title with Beaufort. We saw them in the preseason and while they lost some players, the team still looks good. Some of our players have improved though so it should be a good race.”
This year, two teams from the Lowerstate will advance to the state finals. However, the second-place team from Region 8-AAAA will have to go through the winner of Region 7-AAAA, which is likely to be Wando.
Fort Dorchester fell to 2-2 with Tuesday’s loss, its first in the region. Heading the lineup for the Patriots were Mari Alice Jones, Alison Martin, Laura Fielden, Sammi Young, Monica Downey, Keira Newell and Maya Snype. Patriot coach Mittie Asbury is also expecting a similar finish to the one the Fort had last year when it placed third in the region.
“The girls are doing well, particularly Mari Alice, who is playing much better this year,” Asbury said. “All our players are seasonal so Summerville and Beaufort always kill us but I think we should be competitive with the other teams. The girls are working really hard to improve and they have good attitudes. If that continues, we should be fine.”
