Summerville and Fort Dorchester high schools both landed five players on the first team for the second annual All-County Line football all-star list.
Summerville Communications released its second All-County Line Football Teams this week. Players are selected for the honor based on a vote of sports writers from the Summerville Journal Scene, Goose Creek Gazette and Berkeley Independent, the three newspapers that operate under the Summerville Communications banner. In order to qualify for the all-star teams, athletes must play for a high school located in Dorchester or Berkeley counties.
Heading the list of all-stars is Summerville running back De’Angelo Henderson, who was named the 2009 Dorchester County Offensive Player of the Year. Despite missing three games this season, the junior rushed for 1,567 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also made 19 receptions for 237 yards and four TDs.
“DeAngelo isn’t just a good running back, he is a good student and a good team leader who leads through example,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “I’m sure if he stays on the path he’s on he will be a D-1 prospect. He can catch the ball as well as run it and he has great moves, even when he is running at full speed. His running style reminds me of Barry Sanders.”
Fort Dorchester linebacker Geno Porter was named the 2009 Dorchester County Defensive Player of the Year. The senior made 125 tackles this season to tie with defensive back Laurez Matthews for most tackles on the team. Porter had 20 solo tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, six pass break ups, an interception and a fumble recovery.
“Geno is a four-year starter for us and in our division, that alone makes him unique,” Patriot coach Steve LaPrad said. “He is strong, fast and a hard worker.”
Porter finished his football career at the Fort with 365 tackles, including 28 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks. He has been among the Patriots’ top three leaders in tackles for the past three seasons. He also led the team in the category in 2007, when he made 127 tackles.
Berkeley head coach Jerry Brown is the 2009 All-County Line Coach of the Year. Brown claimed his fourth career state title, and his third at Berkeley, by leading the Stags to the Class AAAA, Division II state championship.
Berkley quarterback Bruce Ellington was named the Berkeley County Offensive Player of the year after rushing for 2,191 yards and 33 touchdowns. The Shrine Bowl athlete was crucial to the Stags’ title run.
Goose Creek linebacker Malcolm Howard was named the 2009 Berkeley County Defensive Player of the Year. The senior was a finalist for this year’s prestigious Mr. Football award.
Other Dorchester County athletes named to the first team were Ashley Ridge receiver Seamus McKinney; Pinewood athlete Mosses Richardson; Summerville center Devin Taylor, defensive lineman Brice Laughlin, linebacker Rondrick Tucker and punter Brett Cleveland; and Fort Dorchester kicker Josh Hall, defensive lineman Montae Adams, defensive lineman Antonio Guy and defensive back Laurez Matthews.
