The Shockwave 11U baseball team earned one of its biggest wins to date last month.
Sadly, the team’s biggest fan wasn’t there to help celebrate.
The travel team was formed in the fall of 2007.
Until last month, every time it played, now matter how far from home, Marvin Postell and his wife were there.
“Mr. and Mrs. Postell have supported our team since the beginning,” Shockwave coach Brad Murray said.
“When we booked hotels to travel all around the southeast, we always counted on the Postell's traveling with us. Mr. Postell didn’t just cheer for his grandson, he cheered for every player as if they were his own.”
But Mr. Postell is now fighting cancer and is unable to attend the team’s tournaments.
The Worth Web Gem Classic March 7-8 was the first in three seasons that he missed.
This was something that did not go unnoticed by the members of the team, who dedicated the tournament to Mr. Postell.
The Shockwave battled against some of the top teams in the state and went undefeated to claim the tournament championship.
The Shockwave outscored its opponents 34-8 that weekend.
When they got back to Summerville, the players presented the team’s first-place plaque to Mr. Postell, an honor usually reserved for the team’s MVP.
“These boys work so hard,” Postell said. “For them to dedicate the victory to me was overwhelming.”
Murray said it was an easy decision to make.
“All of the players were concerned for his health and his spirit at the game was greatly missed,” Murray said.
“Mr. Postell is fighting an incredible battle and he definitely has our respect. The team dedicated their own undefeated victory to him since he was their inspiration for that weekend.”
Team members include batboy Brycen Postell, Chase Byars, Cody Postell, Drew Murray, Tyler Marquez, Ashton Hughes, Barron Knight, Tanner Coleman, Austin Mizzell, Luke Norris, Cole Cleland, Cameron Almond, John Sanchez and Drake Knight. Marvin’s son, Marty Postell, and Kenny Almond help Murray coach the team.
The class AAA team currently has a 15-6 record.
