Calling all interested citizens: the Summerville Police Department still has room for participants in its Citizen’s Police Academy.
Starting August 17, those accepted into the program will take a series of classes that will cover a wide spectrum of topics within the field of law enforcement.
The purpose of the program is to provide citizens who live or work in Summerville a better understanding of the job knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the modern day law enforcement officer. To that end, participants will learn from SPD instructors and employees with specific or specialized knowledge and experience, through use of video and audio presentations, and through practical, hand-on exercises.
By observing different areas of the department and the day-to-day activities of officers on duty, the participants will hopefully take from the experience a new and deeper insight into the challenges of today’s law enforcement personnel.
The classes will be held Tuesdays in the Summerville Police Training Room, 300 W. 2nd North Street, Summerville from 6:30-9:30 p.m. starting Aug. 10.  Participation in the program is limited to 20 students. Each participant must be at least 18 years old, live or work in the town of Summerville, and have an interest in learning about the workings of the police department.
