Budget cuts are all we seem to be hearing about in the news in regards to education. Dorchester School District 2 recently had a furlough day for the teachers, with more to come for the administrators as a way to save money. There are rumblings in the news about perhaps dropping the last 5 days of the school year this year as another option. Money is tight, I fully understand this fact. What I do not understand is the District's decision to mail home report cards for at least the high school students. At $.44 each, this amounts to a decent sum of money and an unnecessary expense since students brought the report cards home for the 1st Quarter, and parents can log in online to retrieve these grades any time they wish. I also understand that there might be an issue with report cards not arriving home when entrusted to the student's care, but these incidences should be handled on a case-by-case basis. Perhaps the District sees this cost as chump change when it is compared to other expenditures, however, saving every little bit counts. Instead of wasting this money on postage, perhaps it could go towards supporting the Fine Arts departments in the schools. Ordering more paper/toner could be an option as well, as paper seems to become vacant during the last few weeks of school. There are many things I personally would rather the District spend this money on instead of postage.
