The Fort Dorchester soccer teams both lost overtime matches to West Ashley Friday.
The Fort boys fought through two overtime periods before falling 1-0 on penalty kicks in North Charleston. The game was physical and balanced as each team got off about a dozen shots without scoring in regulation.
“Obviously I’m disappointed with the loss, but I’m proud of our guys,” Fort coach Rick Nobbs said. “They worked hard for the full 80 minutes, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Both teams had opportunities in regulation. With approximately six minutes remaining in the first half, West Ashley’s Shane Robinson had a shot deflect of the left post of the goal.
Just before the whistle for the half blew, Justin Keys sent a pass in to Randall Eads, who headed a shot that veered just wide.
In the second period, Wesley Eads made a couple of passes that nearly led to scores. His first was to Devin L’Amoreaux, who took a shot that didn’t find its mark. Later in the period, he passed to Keys, who took a shot from directly in front of the goal that sailed just wide.
After two five-minute overtime periods with no score, the game was settled on penalty kicks. The Patriots had successful kicks from L’Amoreaux and Connor Bauknight, but the West Ashley keeper defended three others.
The Fort made two saves in the shootout, but the Wildcats had goals from Robinson, Jamie Moody and Matt Hilton for a 3-2 edge.
West Ashley improved to 8-5-1 with a 3-0 mark in the region while the Fort fell to 7-4-1 with a 1-2 mark in region play.
The Fort girls battled the Lady Wildcats into over time at West Ashley High School. Olivia Pope scored for the Fort in regulation, but the Wildcats answered.
In overtime, West Ashley scored when a Fort player attempted to head a ball away from the goal, but it deflected into the goal, giving West Ashley a 2-1 victory.
West Ashley improved to 7-3, 3-0 while the Lady Patriots fell to 5-2, 2-1. The next home game for the Fort boys is April 28 against Colleton County. The next home game for the Lady Patriots is April 24 against Wando.
