De’Angelo Henderson speed by, bounced off, pushed through and maneuvered around Berkeley defenders to lead the Green Wave to a 17-14 victory Friday.
The Summerville running back carried 18 times for nearly 170 rushing yards and made five receptions for nearly 120 yards and a touchdown as Summerville improved to 2-0 on the season.
“You want to throw me the ball I’ll catch it or if you want to hand it off I’ll run it,” Henderson said. “I just want to do whatever I can to get my team a win. The O-line worked hard and opened up a lot of holes for me tonight so a lot of the credit has to go to them.”
Summerville quarterback Dalton Saunders completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 197 yards and two TDs. The Wave defense also had a good outing, but gave up several big plays that allowed Berkeley to stay in the game.
The Wave marched up field on its first possession and was looking to score, but the Stags D held Summerville on four straight plays from inside the 10-yard line to take over on downs. Berkley moved the ball to its own 40, but a fumble was then costly.
Summerville needed only seven plays after its fumble recovery to score on a 13-yard pass from Dalton Saunders to Chris Williams. After the teams swapped punts, the Stags got on the board with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter with a 79-yard TD run by Rahkeem White, who carried seven times on the night for 104 rushing yards and made three receptions for 75 yards.
The Wave added a 28-yard field goal by Bryan Jordan and a 36-yard TD reception by Henderson to take a 17-7 lead into the half.
Berkeley, which lost star running back D.J. Weathers to an automobile accident last week, mounted a 73-yard scoring drive late in the game. White made two of his catches on the drive, one for 19 yards and a second for 30 and a touchdown with 4:52 remaining.
However, Summerville chewed up nearly three minutes of clock time with its ensuing drive and then held Berkeley to three-and-out on its next possession.
Berkeley QB Tevin Bradshaw was a workhorse for his team in the game and completed 4 of 8 pass attempts for 116 yards. He only netted 12 rushing yards in the game, but covered much more ground than that on his 16 carries.
