The team that knocked the Green Wave grapplers out of the 2009 playoffs rolled into town Monday, but this time Summerville was ready.
The Wave wrestlers earned a 39-33 victory over White Knoll in the opening round of the state AAAA duals playoffs. The match had a very different feel than last year’s first-round match, in which the Timberwolves upset Summerville.
“This year we have put a lot more work in at practice and we came out here tonight with more heart,” 112-pound wrestler Jordan Wigger said. “The fact that it was White Knoll made us even more hungry. We did want to avenge that loss.”
Summerville took charge of the match early, building up a 39-9 lead that allowed it to forfeit the final four matches. The Wave travels to Sumter Feb. 3 for round two.
