The Green Wave placed second at this summer’s Steve Spurrier USC seven on seven passing camp.
Summerville High School sent a squad of approximately two dozen athletes to the camp held June 6 at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia. The group of quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, linebackers and defensive backs competed against 31 other teams from around the Carolinas during the daylong camp.
After two years of not making the finals for the camp, Summerville won six 7-on-7 competitions and tied in another to advance to the championship game. There, Summerville fell to Chester High School.
Summerville had 32 touchdown passes during the competition.
Rising sophomore QB Dalton Saunders took most of the snaps for Summerville and was named the Wave’s Camp MVP.
For him, the camp was his debut at the varsity level.
“I was nervous going into it, but I did better than I thought I would,” Saunders said. “Our receivers made some good plays and we were able to hang right in there with the other teams.”
Summerville assistant coach and former Green Wave QB Joe Call said the coaching staff is pleased with the squad’s effort at the camp.
“We are very young this year so they surprised not only us but a lot of other people because everyone knows how young we are,” Call said. “The camp is mostly a place where players can learn, but a lot of talented athletes participate. Some of our guys really stepped up.”
Rising juniors Chris Williams and Cody Reese and seniors Dejon Wilkinson and Marlon Pryor were among the receivers who had an outstanding performance at the camp.
This year’s outing is the second best Summerville has had at the camp. In 2006, QB Reid McCollum and receiver A.J. Green led the Wave to a win in the championship.
