James C. Settle and Betty M. Settle of Summerville celebrated their 50th anniversary on Friday, Aug. 6. The Settles met as freshmen while attending Furman University. They were married at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Virginia on Aug. 6, 1960.
The couple first moved to Charleston in the mid 60s and then settled in Summerville to raise their family in 1967.
Jim began a long career as Professor of Kinesiology and the Head Track and Field and Cross Country coach at Baptist College at Charleston, which later became Charleston Southern University, and retired in 2004. He returned to coaching track and field at Goose Creek High School for a few years and is now enjoying retirement and is an active member of the Charleston Camellia Society.
Betty was first employed with the Social Security Administration and later joined New York Life Insurance Company. After a successful 20 years with New York Life she retired in 2003. Betty is now an active member of the Summerville Community Orchestra and the ABC coalition. Jim and Betty have been active members of the Summerville Baptist Church since their move to Summerville.
The Settles enjoyed a weekend of celebration with their children and their families: J. Todd Settle of Charleston, Timothy C. Settle of Simpsonville, SC, his wife Rumiko and their daughter Mia Nicole, Ross H. Settle of Summerville, his wife Christy and sons Jacob and Trenton Locklaire, Paige S. Jones of Summerville, her husband Tim and their daughters Jordyn and Ansley. Betty's brother, Jim, and his daughter Li of Tallahassee, Florida were also in attendance for the festivities.
