Local legislators to discuss Special Needs Services budget cuts Sunday
[Subheading]
Thursday, March 11, 2010

Local elected officials Senator Mike Rose, Rep. Jenny Horne, Rep. Joseph Daning, and Rep. Annette Young will host a special meeting Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m. to discuss cuts to benefits for special needs infants, children and adults.
The SC Senate Ways and Means Committee recently voted 17-7 to reduce these benefits
by $42 Million.
The proposed cuts of 28 percent would add to an already heavy load carried by these families. These cuts would make it much more difficult for those with special needs to function.
Adaptive devices such as ramps and lifts currently available under state programs would no longer be available. This would mean that many more in the special needs
community would not have access to medical and rehabilitative services.
Many families may no longer be able to care for their special needs members at home. The DDSN estimates that Institutional Care is 3 to 10 times more expensive than Home
Care.  Consequently these “cutbacks” could have the opposite social and financial
impact on South Carolina than what was originally intended.
All concerned citizens are encouraged to attend. Seacoast Church Summerville is located at 301 East Fifth North St., Summerville S.C. 29483.
