Low Country Deacon’s Alliance Inc. award scholarships

The Low Country Deacon’s Alliance has granted scholarships to  local students as part of  its “Award of Excellence” program essay contest. The students were required to write a 300-500 word essay on science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, language, economics or politics.  The scholarships are awarded each year for four years to the participants maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average. The recipients for 2010 are:
First place: Autumn Porter received a $500.00 scholarship.  She is attending Francis Marion University.  Autumn is a graduate of Summerville High School and, she participated in the Leadership Academy, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Link Crew.  Also, she served as a girl scout for 14 years and earned a Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girl Scouts.  Autumn is a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorial leadership of  Rev. Dr. Augustus D. Robinson, Jr.  She has served on the Youth Usher Ministry for ten plus years and now serves as Head Youth Usher.  Autumn was accepted into four universities and received the State of South Carolina Life Scholarship.  Also, she is one of the recipients of the E.L. Jackson and Vision Scholarship Award from Mt. Moriah.  Autumn is the daughter of Darryl and Casaundra Porter.
• Second place: Galen T. Givens-Rowlin received a $300.00 scholarship.  He is attending Clemson University.  Galen is a graduate of Porter Gaud High School and would like to become
a Pharmacist.  He is outgoing, helpful, athletic, caring and friendly.  Galen is committed to helping others with a smile.  He
was on the faculty list, selected to play football in the All-Star independent football game and received the Best Defensive Back
Award.  Most of his community service was done through the Charleston Youth Leadership Council “Beaux Program”.  Also,
Galen volunteered at the homeless shelter, the Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, the Charleston Academy and the Boys and Girls Club.  Galen was accepted into six universities and   received several scholarships:  Omicron Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Scholarship, College Book Stipend Scholarship, Order of Eastern Star Edward M. Gibson Scholarship, Second place for the A. W. Hunt Scholarship, State of South Carolina Life Scholarship, Charleston Youth Leadership “Jasisri Whipper Scholarship Award” and the Charleston Youth Leadership Council Scholarship.  Galen is a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorial leadership of Moderator Alfred Williams.  Galen is the son of Pearl M. Givens.
