The Pinewood Prep boys extended their winning streak over First Baptist School of Charleston this week to 33 consecutive games.
The last time the Hurricanes beat the Panthers was Feb. 21, 1995, but Pinewood’s dominance over First Baptist almost came to an end Monday as the Panthers traveled to downtown Charleston and were able to pull out a 71-70 win.
Bruce Haynes dominated the Hurricanes both from the perimeter and in the paint, finishing with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Steve Chase added 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the 3-point line.
Brett Alexander continued his fine play with 14 points and 10 assists. It was the first double-double of his career. Kevin Moore came off the bench and hit both of his 3-point shots for an added bonus for Pinewood.  The Panthers shot 8-of-17 from behind the arc against the Hurricanes tough man-to-man defense.
On Tuesday night, the Panthers defeated Thomas Heyward at home 68-38. Ryan Felder and Byron Turner led the Panthers with 15 points each. Arthur Blake had a tremendous game with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals. Drew Williams added 9, while Michael Pendley had 7, Moses Richardson 6 and Logan Stumph 4 to round out the Panther scoring.
The Panthers are now 5-1 in the region and 16-13 overall. A key region match-up takes place Feb. 5 as the top ranked Panthers take on the No. 2 ranked Hilton Head Christian Eagles.
The Lady Panthers also played Thomas Heyward on Tuesday night and defeated them 56-34.  Jasmine Simmons scored 23 points to take the Panthers to 14-4 on the season and 6-2 in the region.
