Fort Dorchester qualified athletes in eight events, but wasn’t able to take home any state titles last weekend.
During the South Carolina AAAA Track and Field Championships held at Lower Richland High School May 15-16, only one Patriot athlete was able to improve on their mark from last week’s qualifying meet. On the other hand, half of the Fort participants were able to place higher than they did at the qualifying meet.
Greg Harris had a 56-feet, 4 and ½ inch throw to finish as the state runner-up in the boys’ shot put. The mark was nearly five feet longer than his best qualifying throw, which earned him the No. 4 seed for Friday’s championship. Teammate Adrian Stewart had a 149-10 throw to place seventh, one spot above his seed.
Miguel Quinn’s times in the 100-meter and 200 dropped, but he climbed three and four spots respectively in the events. The junior placed fifth in the 100 with an 11.25 time and sixth in the 200 with a 22.51 time.
Geno Porter’s 149-10 effort in the discus was nearly seven feet shy of his qualifying mark. However, he jumped three spots to finish fifth.
Christopher Sievert placed eighth in the 400 with a 1:00.44 time.
On the girls’ side, Keri Emanuel had a 17-09 mark in the long jump to place third. Her 19-00 qualifying mark would have been good enough to win the event had she been able to match it Saturday. She placed third in the triple jump with a 37-06 mark after qualifying in fourth place.
Kaysee Sullivan entered the meet as the No. 2 seed for the discus throw with a 38-01 toss. Her 37-00 throw Saturday earned her sixth place.
The Fort boys tallied 22 team points to place ninth out of 42 teams at the meet. The Summerville boys tallied 30 points to place sixth. Wando (66) won the event. Berkeley (199) placed14th while Goose Creek and Stratford tied for 32nd with five points each.
The Fort girls tallied 15 points to place 15th out of 29 teams. Dutch Fork won the meet with 62 points. The Summerville girls placed fourth while Stratford (23) placed 12th, Berkeley (14) 17th and Goose Creek (12) 18th.
