The Patriot basketball teams swept Beaufort Tuesday night.
The Fort boys followed a victory over West Ashley Jan. 22 with a 64-53 victory over Beaufort to complete a clean run through the first half of its Region 8-AAAA schedule. Fort wing R.J. Slawson paced the Pats with 23 points against the Eagles. Corey Wright added 12 and Laurez Matthews 9 as the Patriots improved to 17-2, 5-0.
For the Eagles, Dymonte Gwathney scored 16 points and Rakeem Palmer had 12. Beaufort fell to 9-11, 1-3.
The Fort returns to action next week when it travels to Colleton County Feb. 2 and hosts a rematch with West Ashley Feb. 5.
The Fort girls earned a 57-45 victory Tuesday. The teams entered the half tied, but the Lady Patriots outscored Beaufort 15-11 in the third period and 19-11 in the fourth.
It was the first region win of the season for the Fort, which improved to 7-9, 1-3.
“The girls were determined to win this game,” Fort coach Valerie Reese said. “They played with fire, passion and desire. This region is difficult and it is hard to get wins. Our guards – Indie Lawson, Bridget Barnett and Raygon Hendrix – picked up their games. Our post players – CeCe Kendrick, Bianca Dunlap and Kaysee Sullivan– were on their game and came up with rebounds and steals. The other girls did their part also.”
Barnett led all scorers with 18 points, but several of her teammates also had a hot hand. Lawson finished with 17 while Hendrix provided 9, Kendrick 8 and Dunlap 6.
Deja Jackson led the Eagles with 14 points and Arielle McPhee chipped in 11. Beaufort dropped to 9-11, 0-4.
