There was a whole lot of nose-wiggling going on as dogs sniffed out the competition at the second annual Paws in the Park Dog Show in Azalea Park on Saturday.
Masters beamed with pride as their canines heeled, sat and strutted their outfits in the azalea-filled and weather-perfect venue.
Members of the Summerville Noon and Evening Lions clubs and representatives of the Frances R. Willis SPCA were on hand as sponsors to keep the festivities moving.
The park was filled with commands, squeaky little barks and the deepest loud woofs, as dogs (and their owners) competed in eight events.
Also on hand were local vendors, food booths and a lot of opportunities for the dogs to network.
“This year the Lions Clubs teamed with the SPCA at Holly Patterson’s suggestion,” said George Jenkins, president of the Noon Lions Club.
“We had a great turnout of dogs and owners as well as spectators,” he said.
“It was fun,” said Patterson.
All the proceeds from the Lions Club are being donated to the Leader Dog Program in Rochester, Michigan,
“They provide leader dogs free of charge to the blind and sight impaired,” Jenkins said.
The SPCA’s share of the proceeds is being donated to the Frances Willis SPCA in Summerville.
Jenkins said that owners could sign up their dogs in eight different categories. The blue ribbon winners in each group were:

Greatest Trick:                  Chelsea, owned by Jim Herring
Smallest Dog:                   Gracie, owned by Cindy Spafford
Most Macho:                     Zeus, owned by Brad Steele
Most Prissy:                      Sadie Ray, owned by Debra Henry
Best Costume:                   Sadie, owned by Emma & Savannah Sutton
Most Lion-Like:                Cooper, owned by Kyle McKeever
Largest Dog:                     Joey, owned by Vickie Brumbelow
Dog/Owner Dress-alike:   Matt, owned by Mary Frances Page

The Summerville Noon Lions Club meets at Shoney’s the first and third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Jim Strobel is the president of the Summerville Evening Lions Club which meets the 3rd Thursday at 7 p.m. at Shoneys. The Lions Club is the largest service organization in the world with 1.4 millions members.
