Dear Editor, June 7 marked the anniversary of a Supreme Court decision in 1965 that legalized contraception within marriage. By 1972 another Supreme Court decision had legalized contraception for single adults. A Pandora’s box had been opened that would lead to abortion on demand, invitro fertilization, embryonic stem cell research, cloning, and even gay marriage. The connection with these other issues should be obvious. Once we separate sex from its’ procreative purpose science and the culture moves rapidly on to unethical and immoral possibilities. The sexual act has two inseparable purposes, which are procreative and unitive, or simply babies and bonding. When these two purposes are separated they lead to a progression down a slippery slope. If the purpose of sex is not babies, but only bonding then there is no problem with same-sex marriage, sex outside of marriage, and abortion on demand. When we separate bonding from sex, babies can be created through invitro fertilization without both a male and female parent and have one parent or two same-sex parents. Extra embryos from this process can be discarded or used as biological material for scientific research. The effects of these practices have been disastrous for our society because the family is so critical to its’ survival. The traditional family is needed to create and nurture life and to provide a safe loving environment to educate and instill values in the next generation. Society cannot degrade the purpose of sex to merely self-gratification. When this is done, it creates a breeding ground for every form of sexual perversion. On Saturday, June 6th a protest was held to denounce this decision in front of the local Planned Parenthood facility, which is funded by millions of our tax dollars to distribute various sorts of contraception. Planned Parenthood is also the largest provider of abortions in the country. They claim that contraception and valueless, “safe” sex education will lower the number of abortions and sexually transmitted diseases and rigorously oppose in the political arena abstinence-only sex education programs. They oppose them because they know have been proven to be the most effective means to eliminate these problems. They also know that if these problems were eliminated, they would be out of business and their golden goose cooked.
