Potent offenses are on tap for three area football teams.
On Oct. 9, Summerville, Fort Dorchester and Pinewood all face teams that know how to find the end zone.
The Wave hosts James Island for its homecoming game; the Patriots host Stratford; and the Panthers travel to Northwood Academy. All three kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Green Wave will face a Trojan offense that has found the end zone at least three times in every game this season except during its 7-24 loss to Wando.
On four occasions, the Trojans posted more than 30 points, including 44 against Hilton Head, 51 against Colleton County and 41 against Beaufort.
“They may be the best offense we’ve played,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “They like to spread out and throw it. We are hoping we can put pressure on their quarterback. If not, he could pick us apart. Berkeley only beat them by a point and Beaufort only beat them by a touchdown.”
Last week, Summerville (5-1, 2-0) was without 13 players who were suspended by the high school league, but defeated West Ashley 38-14.
This week, the team has some of those players back, including three offensive starters.
James Island (2-4, 0-2), which has dropped its last three games, is coming off a 41-48 loss to Beaufort.
The Patriots (4-2, 1-2) host a Stratford offense that has put up 150 points this season. The Knights (3-3, 0-2) have several offensive weapons and the ability to move the ball on the ground or in the air.
Summerville and Berkeley combined to put up 93 points against the Knights, but Stratford has held all its other opponents to 14 points or less.
“They have a good team,” Patriot coach Steve LaPrad said. “They are the only team that has beat Beaufort and they beat Sumter. They seem to be more offensive-minded this year, but traditionally their defense has outshined their offense. As always, they are well-coached on the defensive side of the ball.”
The Patriots are coming off a 34-28 win over Colleton. The Pats had the chance to put that game away early, but didn’t.
“The flow of that game was just bad,” LaPrad said. “It seemed like it was never going to end. But we beat a good team and I’m proud of the way our kids kept their composure. They have worked hard this week so hopefully Friday night will be smoother.”
The Knights are coming off a 13-14 loss to Goose Creek. Stratford QB Chris Hanna completed 14-of-29 pass attempts in the game for 192 yards as the Knights rolled up more than 300 yards of offense.
Pinewood (3-3, 0-2) travels to Northwood Academy to face an offense that has put up more than 40 points during five of its seven games. The Chargers (6-1) posted 63 points in their season opener against Cathedral Academy and 49 points against Hilton Head Prep last week.
The team’s sole loss came to Porter-Gaud by a 21-28 margin.
The Chargers are coming off a 29-20 win over Hilton Head Prep. The Panthers are coming off an 18-21 loss to Manning Academy.
