COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina lawmakers plan to discuss a 1951 law requiring any group that wants to overthrow the federal government or any other government in the country to register with the state and pay a $5 fee.
Thursday's debate in a Senate panel is an effort to repeal the McCarthy-era statute put on the book to deter communists.
Conservative activists recently began questioning the legislation, worried they may become targets.
Sen. Larry Martin is pushing the legislation. The Pickens Republican says it is one of many archaic measures in the state code and constitution that has long outlived its usefulness — if it ever had one.
