On June 2, rising sixth-grader Blake Hamilton won the Governor’s Citizenship Award at the Spann Elementary School Awards Night. The award honors one student from each participating school for responsibility, service, leadership, character and discipline. As a third-grader, Blake wrote an essay inspiring his school to organize a donation drive for the Frances R. Willis SPCA. Since the initial drive, Spann has held three additional school-wide drives. This past year, Blake and his family sponsored a young boy in El Salvador through Compassion International. The money was used to help the young boy and his family buy food and pay their rent. Blake made A’s and B’s this past year, scores well on standardized tests and will be taking accelerated class in the upcoming school year. He will attend Rollings School of the Arts next year.
