To celebrate Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 25-31) and raise money for local charities, Summerville Catholic School hosted a festival in which students could play on a jump castle, have their faces painted and partake in an assortment of games such as bowling, musical chairs and a bean bag toss.
Lisa Tanner, principal of Summerville Catholic School, said that the “Kids Care Carnival” was an excellent way to embrace the theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week – celebrate service.
“The kids are working the booths and buying the tickets,” Tanner said. “It’s a great event and we raised close to $1,000 to donate.”
For 10 cents, a student could purchase one ticket, which could be used to play games or “buy” foods such as doughnuts and frozen desserts. Many students purchased dozens of tickets knowing that the money was going toward a good cause and that the more tickets they bought, the more games they could enjoy.
In addition to playing the games and delighting in the carnival food, some brave students swapped tickets to have their nails painted and their hair dyed by fellow classmates.
Tanner says that the entire school embraced the “celebrate service” theme, as each of the school’s classes hosted a game, which made the fundraising a team effort. The students will soon hold a vote to determine to which charities the proceeds will be distributed.
