A 49-year old Summerville woman was found hanging in her cell in the Summerville Annex of the Dorchester County, according to County Coroner Chris Nesbit. The woman has been identified as Susan Stanfield, who lived in the Oakbrook area, Nesbit said. Stanfield was being held at the Summerville annex after being arrested on Monday, Feb. 1 and charged with DUI and Open Container by Dorchester County Deputies. She was found hanging in her cell at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning She refused to take a Datamaster test to determine her alcohol level. After she was booked in, she was taken to a cell awaiting a bond hearing that was to be held Tuesday in front of a local magistrate. Just prior to 9 a.m. she was found by one of the Detention employees who was making rounds. Nesbit said the woman used a bed sheet to hang herself. After being cut down she could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. Rounds are made at regular intervals by employees and she checked not long prior to being discovered. Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have been called in to investigate as would be common in a situation such as this.
