Coming off a 35-8 victory over Garrett Tech last week, Ashley Ridge travels to Cane Bay for a rematch Oct. 9.
The Swamp Foxes jumped out to a 14-0 lead at Garrett Tech as quarterback Cameron Cox (4-for-8 passing) connected with Nick Webb on two touchdown passes. The first reception netted 15 yards and the second 31.
“Seamus McKinney was out so we went to Nick more,” Ashley Ridge coach Doc Davis said. “He did a good job and I’m glad we were able to get him involved more.”
Freshman running back Romelo Doctor also had a good night, rushing for 130 yards and a TD on 10 carries.
The Foxes added touchdowns on a one-yard run by Otis Neals and a fumble that Lorenzo Baker recovered and returned 20 yards. Kicker Dalton Robinson was 5-for-5 on PAT attempts.
“Our offense was very efficient in the first half and we played better defense, which was good to see,” Davis said.
This week marks the fourth time Ashley Ridge and Cane Bay have met on the football field. The Swamp Foxes lead the series 2-1.
Unlike the last meeting on Sept. 25 when the Foxes handed the Cobras a 37-34 loss, this week’s game does count toward the region standings.
Cane Bay has a 2-4 record, but two of the losses came to Timberland and Hanahan. The team is coming off a 23-13 win over Bishop England that left the Cobras at 1-0 in region play.
Ashley Ridge improved to 4-2, 1-0 last week with its third consecutive victory.
All the games between the two second-year teams have been tight. Fans can expect a lot of excitement.
“They are a good team and we were fortunate to win last time,” Davis said. “Really we just had the ball last and were able to score.”
The Swamp Fox offense should be hitting on all cylinders for the game. McKinney has recovered from a concussion he suffered a few weeks ago and is expected to play. Cox has a proven arm and the tailback tandem of Neals and Doctor has come on strong this season.
“Those two compliment each other well,” Davis said. “The great thing about them is neither one could care less who scores the touchdown or gets the rushing yards.”
