My name is Paul S. Denning and I am a home delivery contractor and I am writing you this to tell you the story of the fallen tree that occurred on Jan. 31. I was on my way to begin my route as I do every day traveling down Main Street through Summerville towards Knightsville. As I approached the railroad tracks I spotted a blue flash in the sky and told my helpers (my two children Kristin and Matthew) that a transformer blew and we would probably see no lights in the upcoming area. As we continued on our way through town we noticed a small fire that imaged someone burning leaves in the ditch alongside Main Street just before the Hamilton Hotel. We also noticed that this side of town was without electricity. We continued down Main Street past the hotel and in a split second I saw a tree that had fallen across the road and tried to stop to avoid hitting the tree. I was unable to accomplish this and my van struck the tree causing the trunk of the tree to crush the windshield out of the front and causing the side window to be blown out of the van. The tree struck my daughter and son in the head and the impact caused all of us to be covered with glass and bark from the tree. I was stunned after the impact and pulled my van off the road at the intersection and at this moment we heard another crash and moments after that another. I noticed that the other vehicles were also pulled off the road and got out to see if everybody was okay. The vehicle immediately behind me had sustained major damage and had a passenger stuck in the passenger side of the vehicle. They informed me that 911 had been called. I noticed that there was a police car pulled over and I returned to my vehicle to sit with my children and await police instructions. We were given the report and our vehicle was towed from the scene. It became a total loss. While I waited I had to call my supervisor of the accident and she immediately responded to see if she could help. We also had another local carrier that arrived on the scene as this was her route area. They were both instrumental in the effort to see that everybody was alright. We all experienced divine intervention. I must tell you in hopes that you can spread this news, we indeed were all protected this night by the loving hands of our creator and we all owe him our thanks and honor for his love. I also thank the folks who responded to the scene too, they should be commended, as all were able to be cleared and everyone taken care of. A special thanks to my supervisor and colleague for their support. I hope that this tell the story to you that the Fallen Tree. It was indeed a menace.
