Harry Nettles dug the hole on the kindergarten playground. Kindergarten students anxiously held cups of soil for the planting ceremony, and Principal Rene Harris began with some opening remarks at Beech Hill Elementary for the planting of the Joe Bunch Memorial tree.
In conjunction with the Single Unit Chapter of the School Nutrition Association and Southern Garden Nursery the trees were provided to several schools and will be planted in memory of Dorchester District 2 employee, Joe Bunch who was killed in a car accident last October.
“The tree will be planted here in the kindergarten playground area because these students will be here the longest to see the tree mature,” Harris said.
Principal Harris and Assistant Principal Ginny Ross sang a song written by Ms. Harris for the special occasion with help from the 170 kindergarten students in attendance. The students were reminded of what a tree needs to survive as each one put soil into the hole around the tree.
“You must remember to nurture and care for this tree,” Harris told the students. “It is being placed here in loving memory of someone who worked very hard for our schools.”
