The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two in connection with a rash of auto break-ins in the Legend Oaks neighborhood.
DCSO Major John Garrison said Rasheen Lequan Walters, 17 of Sprucewood Drive, Summerville and a 15-year-old juvenile have been arrested and charged with Breaking Into a Motor Vehicle and Possession of Stolen Property. Each count of Breaking Into a Motor Vehicle carries a potential 5-year prison sentence and a fine of $ 1000, or both, he said.
These arrests could clear up as many as 18 break in cases, Garrison said.
In making the arrests, Garrison noted that strong cooperative efforts between patrol, investigations, and the community was instrumental in making the arrests.
“This is how it’s supposed to work – and it did,” Garrison said.
Residents of the neighborhood became very concerned after a number of break-ins into cars occurred last weekend. One resident actually installed hidden security cameras on his property – and those cameras caught two subjects on video who appeared to be attempting to break into the resident’s car.
Garrison also urged people to be vigilant about securing their property. Most of these types of thefts occur from unsecured vehicles, he noted.
“The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to remove valuable from their vehicles or lock them in the trunk where they cannot be seen by someone walking by -- and to lock their vehicles,” he said.  “Also, maintaining serial numbers from electronics such as GPS units, radar detectors and radios makes it much easier to return property once it is recovered.”
