Green Wave grappler Jordan Wigger returned from a trip to North Dakota this summer as an All-American.
Wigger competed in the Junior Free Style National Championships in Fargo July 17-25. The rising sophomore won four matches against wrestlers from across the nation while losing only two to earn a spot in the top eight for the 98-pound division, thus earning All-American status. He then defeated California wrestler Manny Marin by technical fall to place fifth overall for the division.
Wigger joined the Green Wave wrestling team as a freshman last season and had an immediate impact, helping the team advance to the playoffs. Wrestling in the 103-pound division, he won an individual state championship in March.
“He was a great addition to our team and showed great leadership as a freshman,” Summerville coach Daryl Tucker said. “He is dedicated to the sport of wrestling so it’s nice to see him become an All-American.”
Eli Ashby, a rising senior at Summerville High School, went 4-2 in the 130-pound division at Nationals, but didn’t advance to the top eight. After finishing as the state runner-up for his class in 2009 and 2008 and placing third in 2007, Ashby will continue to chase his first individual state title this winter.
