The Summerville boys came within inches of taking the No. 6 ranked 4-A team in the state into overtime Tuesday, three different times.
The unranked Green Wave suffered a 42–45 loss to West Ashley in Summerville. The Wave took a 7-point lead into the half and nearly held off a Wildcat rally, but West Ashley was clutch in the closing minutes.
“We played such good defense the first two periods,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “Holding West Ashley to only 16 points in the first half is something to be proud of, but then we gave up 16 points in the third period. Aaron Jiles picked up his third foul early in the third and when we had to take him out, it hurt what we could do. It was a tough loss. Another free throw or put back here or there and we probably would have had them.”
The Wildcats outscored Summerville 16-9 in the third to tie the game at 32. The lead changed a few times in the final period, but the Wildcats got the swing that meant the most.
In the final minute, West Ashley’s Matt Kennedy went to the free-throw line and hit two shots for the 45-42 score. The Wave managed to get off three different three-point attempts in the final 20 seconds, but each bounced off the rim.
The first was by center Mario Pendarvis, who made it look like he was going to drive the lane, but instead pulled up at the arc for a shot.
The second came from Jiles, who is Summerville’s point guard. No one was able to cleanly rebound the ball after his shot and it nearly went out of bounds before Jiles made a leaping save and dished to J.D. Tucker, who got off the third attempt just before the buzzer.
Kennedy scored 9 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth period. Earl Lawrence added 9 for the Wildcats and D’Montre Edwards 8.
Pendarvis led Summerville with 16 points while J.D. Tucker pitched in 11 and Jiles 7. Jiles scored 5 of his points in the first half.
Summerville dropped to 11-10 with a 3-3 mark in the region while West Ashley improved to 19-2, 5-1. The Wave hosts Beaufort Friday and West Ashley travels to Fort Dorchester.
The West Ashley girls (15-4, 6-1) earned a 47-33 win over the Lady Wave (6-12, 2-5) Tuesday. Chentieh Ladson led West Ashley with 16 points. Shanolla Council led Summerville with 15.
