CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A mother and her young twin sons have died in a house fire near the South Carolina coast.

Multiple media outlets reported the fire started shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday in Charleston.

Charleston Fire Department spokesman Mark Ruppel says there was damage to the kitchen and heavy smoke throughout the house.

Ruppel says the victims were taken to two area hospitals where they were pronounced dead. The names of the victims have not been released.

Ruppel says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
