A permanent fix to the entire problem: PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. Light rail, especially. It's taking my kid 4 hours per day to get from Summerville to College of Charleston via car ride to the nearest bus stop at Citadel Mall. It's a choice, people, and I'll never understand how people willingly choose to spend 2-4 hours per day just getting to and from work.

Raise the sales tax on gas stations within a 1/2 mile of all interstate highways. Let the tourist and travelers passing through the state pay for it. You can't travel anywhere up North without paying some kind of toll. We can do the same with a higher gas tax.

Please, they have raised our taxes TWICE in order to "fix" our road. Two years later...road is not fixed...its worse, but I'm still paying the tax. The average citizen could do a better job spending our tax money than the government.

I'm almost ready to tell the government, "here, take it all, just give me what you think I need to survive"! Which is what the current administration wants anyway. They want to take away exemptions from industries who create jobs and tax the working people more. We the people can't take much more of this BS. Guess what? We won't.

The State newspaper reported the Tax Realignment Commission voted unanimously Thursday to recommend that the state's gas tax be raised a nickel a gallon.
South Carolina's current gasoline tax is 16 cents a gallon and hasn't changed since 1987. Commission member Kenneth Cosgrove says he doesn't anyone would disagree that the state's roads are in pretty bad shape.
The commission will send recommendations to state lawmakers, who return in January. Some lawmakers say they don't expect the General Assembly would approve any tax increases in the current economy.
The panel also is recommending lowering the 6 percent state sales tax to 5 percent, but eliminating the tax exemptions on many industries.
