SC DOT plans for standardized roadside memorials
Published Friday, July 30, 2010 8:15 AM
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Relatives of people killed on South Carolina roadways can now honor their loved ones with standardized roadside memorial signs.

Multiple media outlets report Friday that state Transportation Secretary Buck Limehouse says he hopes the new signs will be a safe alternative to homemade memorials, which can be distracting to drivers.

The new signs can only go on state highways and will be placed on the right side of the road. If the accident happened on an interstate, memorial signs will be placed at the nearest welcome center or rest area.

The new signs cost $250 and will be up for two years before they're mailed to the families that paid for them.

The state Transportation Department is accepting applications for the signs on its website starting Aug. 9.
