SC State, former president settle lawsuit

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State University and its former president have settled a lawsuit over his dismissal more than two years ago.

Multiple media outlets reported that the school and Andrew Hugine Jr. said Wednesday the lawsuit has been settled.

Hugine had sued the school and the trustees who voted to dismiss him in December 2007. He had worked at the school for 33 years, becoming president in 2003.

Hugine's attorney, Benjamin Mabry, says his client received $60,000 as part of the settlement. School spokeswoman Tameka Kenan did not confirm that amount.

Hugine had sought $2 million in actual and punitive damages from the individual defendants and up to $1 million from the school. He had dropped the suit against the individuals in July.

Hugine is now president of Alabama A&M university.
