SC city votes for daytime curfew for youth
Published Tuesday, March 09, 2010 8:26 AM
FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina city has approved a daytime curfew for young people who should be in school.

The Morning News of Florence reported Florence City Council voted 4-3 Monday to impose a curfew for young people between the ages of 6 through 16 between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on school days.

Mayor Stephen Wukela says the local law will allow police to deal with juveniles who should be in school, without sending them into the court system.

Police who come across young people will offer to take them to school or home. If youngsters refuse, their guardian will be issued a citation. A second offense will carry a $100 fine.

The ordinance takes effect at the beginning of the new school year this summer.
