SC historian sleeps in slave cabin that had power
Published Monday, August 23, 2010 9:36 AM
ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina slave cabin that historian Joe McGill slept in this weekend was unlike the others he's visited.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported the cabins in Anderson had meter boxes and evidence of satellite service.

McGill says the four small, painted frame homes are urban compared to some of the cabins he's stayed in his effort to encourage people to save those that are left in the state.

McGill says the evidence of modern conveniences indicates the cabins were in use years after they were built.

The Ladson man is a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He's spent the night at five other slave quarters in South Carolina.

McGill says a local buyer could preserve the cabins and make them livable again. All four in Anderson are for sale for $20,000.
