SC seeks money to mark Civil War anniversary
Published Monday, August 30, 2010 8:38 AM
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Civil War began in South Carolina nearly 150 years ago and officials are looking for money to mark the anniversaries over the coming five years.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday the anniversary of South Carolina's secession in December will consist mostly of lectures.

The April anniversary of the first shot will include the National Guard firing over Charleston Harbor to mark the attack on Fort Sumter.

The Fort Sumter-Fort Moultrie Trust has raised about $55,000 and is seeking an additional $25,000. The city of Charleston hopes to raise $100,000 from private sources and a member of the trust will ask state lawmakers for $75,000.

Former Fort Sumter superintendent John Tucker says the Civil War is one of the most important events in U.S. history.
