Prostate Surgery With Fast Recovery
The da Vinci® Surgical System recently introduced at Trident Medical Center gives patients a powerful new weapon in the fight against prostate cancer.
Significant advantages made possible by use of the da Vinci robotic system are making this technology an increasingly popular option for treatment of prostate cancer through removal of the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue. In the past, patients undergoing traditional prostatectomy risked nerve damage and possible effects such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, in addition to pain, blood loss during surgery and possibly extended recovery time.
Robotic-assisted surgery takes place through smaller incisions and uses magnifying scopes to obtain enhanced views, allowing surgeons to operate in a more delicate and precise manner. Patients bleed less and recover faster.
“The robot does not conduct the surgery itself—it does nothing on its own,” says Scott Wingo, MD, urologist at Trident Health System. “Surgeons control all of the instrument movements. The da Vinci system allows the surgeon to see the anatomy, including blood vessels and nerves, very clearly and therefore operate more accurately than was possible before.”
Theodore Brisson, MD, urologist at Trident Health System, agrees that the ?da Vinci’s 3-D video view of the surgical area translates into more precise removal of the prostate gland, leading to a less painful operation and a quicker recovery time for the patient.
“The biggest advantages of this type of surgery are reduced blood loss compared to what we’ve seen with regular laparoscopic procedures and faster recovery times,” ?says Dr. Brisson. “Patients can return to their daily routines in one or two weeks. ?As a result, robotic-assisted surgery is becoming the most preferred option ?for prostatectomy.”
“With the da Vinci system, the usual hospital stay for a patient is one or two days compared to twice that time with traditional surgery,” Dr. Wingo says. “The system takes time to learn to operate, but the benefits for patients are great.”
Along with the investment in the technology itself, Trident Medical Center has invested considerable time in training surgeons to make best use of the equipment.
“The da Vinci procedure takes prostatectomy to a whole new level,” says Christy Campbell, RN, robotics coordinator for Trident Medical Center. “We wanted our local patients to be able to benefit from this advanced technology.”
