The Flowertown Garden Club sponsors students each summer to attend Camp Wildwood, a hands-on, outdoor environmental camp, located in Kings Mountain State Park, SC. The club was pleased to send Ansley Rauton and Shelvy Strobel the week of June 17-23, 2012. At Camp Wildwood an appreciation for wise use of our natural resources is taught along with leadership, self-reliance, self-discipline and independence.
At the September 10 meeting of the Garden Club, the campers shared with the members some of the learning experiences and great fun they enjoyed even though they had no cell phones, ipods, TV or air conditioning for a whole week. They both spoke about how glad they were to have gone to camp and the lifelong friends they made that week.
It was exciting to learn that Ansley Rauton was chosen as Camper of the week, which means she will be invited back next summer as a Second Year camper. Garden Clubs in South Carolina sponsor 75% of the campers. Camp Wildwood is operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources by Dan Dupre, DNR Education Specialist.
