Summerville girls win tight contest with Wando

Heather Chapman snags a rebound for Summerville Tuesday.

The Summerville girls’ basketball team edged out Wando 36-33 in the Green Wave’s season opener.
“We feel fortunate,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “You have to credit Wando for dictating the tempo for much of the game, but we were resilient and able to turn up the pressure in a few key stretches. That was probably the difference in the game.”
Things got off to a slow start as the teams battled to a 12-all tie three-fourths of the way through the opening half. Summerville’s JaKaylah Ravenell then hit a jumper to kick off a Wave surge and Summerville took a 17-12 advantage into the third period.
Wando rallied to enter the final period ahead 23-22. Summerville regained the lead but just inside the two-minute mark Wando tied the game at 31-all.
Ashley Green swapped baskets with a Wando player and Zuri Green sank a couple of free throws to give Summerville a two-point lead. Then both teams blew opportunities at the free-throw line.
The game was iced when Tinara Brown made a free throw with 9.6 seconds remaining and Ashley Green forced a turnover on Wando’s ensuing possession.
“We are not as good a team as we are capable of being right now, so we are looking forward to getting better as the season goes on,” Legare said.
Summerville travels to Berkeley County Nov. 30. The Wave’s next home game on Dec. 7 is also against the Lady Stags.
